Choose Your Pool Design in San Diego

Better Place Remodeling has been designing showpiece pools throughout San Diego for nearly two decades. We specialize in creating custom works of art that add to the aesthetics and value of your outdoor space.

1 Above-Ground Pools

This is the most common choice for a backyard pool in San Diego as they are easy to install and do not take elaborate landscaping. We often build them around a deck or patio to provide a place to lounge while using the pool.

Because they come in different shapes and sizes and are made on the ground using metal or plastic, they are easy to take down and best for all backyard layouts.

2 In-Ground Pools

In-ground pools are built directly into the landscape and are a permanent addition. They require excavation and a lot of ground preparation work before installation and can be customized with different features such as tile work, waterfalls, and lighting.

The available options in San Diego include the following:

  • Fiberglass Pools are made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), constructed off-site, and transported to the installation location.
  • Concrete Pools are built on-site by pouring concrete into a steel framework, then finished with plaster, paint, and other specialty coating finishes.
  • Vinyl-Liner Pools – constructed using panel walls fastened together on a concrete foundation

3 Lap Pools

Lap pools are long, narrow pools designed for swimming laps and exercise. They are typically between 30 and 70 feet long, at least 4 feet deep, and are commonly used for rehabilitation and physical therapy.

4 Infinity Pools

Also known as negative edge or vanishing edge pools, infinity pools have one or more edges that seem to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, creating the illusion that the pool extends to infinity.

We can install them in your backyard, with the pool’s edge facing a natural feature such as a lake, ocean, mountain range, or even an adjacent property to give the illusion that the water flows into the horizon.

5 Outdoor Hot Tubs and Spas

These are small pools made from acrylic and fiberglass, filled with heated water, and used for hydrotherapy and relaxation. They can be round, square, or rectangular and are designed to fit any size or space.

6 Carved Rock Pools

We design these pools to look like natural rock formations made of concrete or gunite with features such as waterfalls and grottos to enhance the natural look. They blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape, creating a natural-looking oasis for tropical-themed backyards.

    San Diego Pool Construction Permit

As a pool construction and remodeling contractor in San Diego, we have the experience to help you navigate through the bureaucracy of obtaining permits for pool and spa construction.

For starters, a permit is not required for above-ground pools. However, in-ground pools, such as lap or infinity pools, need a residential building permit and other permits.

To apply for the permit(s), we submit an application to the Building and Planning department with your property information, our details – architectural and engineering, and a detailed description of the proposed project. We also need to submit three sets of the required documents:

    • A plot plan showing your entire property, proposed pool or spa, driveways and walkways, parking areas, wells, retaining walls, utilities, and other structures on the property.
    • Pool construction details, including soil data, foundation, structure, plumbing, mechanical and electrical details.
    • Plan for pool design and its location on the property.
    • Detailed engineering data with signed calculations and geotechnical report.
    • Detailed energy calculation data.

Our Pool Design and Construction Process

Our San Diego pool and spa service includes designing, obtaining permits, generating engineered plans, and managing every aspect of the pool construction process.

    San Diego Pool Construction Permit

    • Location, Layout, and Design – We first identify the location of the pool on your property and work with you to create the best overall layout and design of the pool. This includes the shape, size, and any special features of the pool.
    • Excavation of Earth – Next, we excavated the area to make room for the pool and related features such as decks or patios.
    • Construction of Pool Base – With adequate filling, compaction, and a layer of concrete, the pool base is completed to ensure the pool remains level and stable.
    • Steel Cage Reinforcement – we add steel reinforcement to the pool walls and bottom for structural strength and stability, as well as the side stairs per the design.
    • Plumbing and Electrical Installations – next, we install the plumbing and electrical systems, including drainage and plumbing lines, pool pump and filters, and other features per the design.
    • Shotcreting – The pool walls are then coated with a layer of shotcrete, a mixture of concrete and water sprayed onto the walls for a smooth surface.
    • Waterproofing – The pool is waterproofed to prevent water from seeping into the ground beneath.
    • Interior Finish – Adding interior pool finish, such as plaster or pebble finish.
    • Construction of Coping – Finally, the edge of the pool is constructed.

My wife and I hired Better Place Remodeling on May 7, 2020, and our project was completed on August 31, 2020. Evi was the first person with whom we made in-person contact, and let me tell you, he exuded nothing but professionalism, courtesy, and respect to both my wife and me! Having hired F.A.T. Construction prior under the general foreman Tony Chavez and having a VERY POOR experience with that contractor, my wife and I were very skeptical, to say the least. Evi quickly earned our trust and our business through his constant contact and updates. He always kept my wife in the loop with all major decisions during the project. Had I not continuously kept adding more to the project, Evi and his crew would have finished a lot sooner than expected. Evi even went so far as to bring us his favorite type of coffee direct from Israel as we had a good working relationship. The one time I got frustrated at the job was nothing to do with Better Place Remodeling, but rather the City of Escondido with their slow permit approval process due to COVID-19. Even though this wasn't Evi's fault, he even brought me Starbucks coffee one night and further explained the backlog of permits. I also would like to send a shout-out to Barr and to Evi's top Landscaper Herman. Barr stepped in and helped Evi with our project when Evi's plate was full. Barr also exuded the same professionalism, courtesy, and respect to both my wife and me! Herman? What can I say? The guy has landscaping skills! Let him make suggestions to you and be open-minded about them-you will not be disappointed! Thanks, Evi, Barr, and Herman for such tremendous work on our home!

      FAQs

Given that this may be a new experience, we provide you with the insights, information and resources to understand your pool construction process.

1 How Long Will It Take To Build My Pool?

The timelines vary depending on the size and type of pool. When we determine the design for your pool, we will provide you with a timeline that gives you a realistic estimate of how long your project will take.

2 Will the Pool Add Value to My Home?

Absolutely! Our pools are gorgeous additions to any backyard. They make your home more desirable and valuable, especially to buyers with families.

3 How Much Slope Should Be Provided To Swimming Pools?

We provide the pool base with a slope to facilitate water drainage to the filter system. We decide on the slope gradient during the design phases to ensure that it does not affect the balance of swimmers.

We recommend a slope of 1 in 80 for efficient draining and 1 in 40 for pools used by children and amateur swimmers.

4 How to choose the location for Swimming Pool?

Depending on your privacy and safety demands, pool size and layout, drainage systems, and zoning and building codes, we will advise on the correct pool location after assessing your property.

Generally, we recommend a flat terrain to reduce the costs associated with excavation and filling.

5 What is the most popular in-ground pool shape?

The most popular inground pool shape is the rectangular pool because it is versatile and can fit into different backyard layouts and sizes. It is also a classic shape that suits different design styles, from traditional to modern.
